SN GM Freeman 4 Read-Only

Senator Freeman made Chair of Committee on the Future of Mental Healthcare, October 2017

Since being nominated to the Seanad, I have advocated for the creation of a Committee on Mental Healthcare in Ireland and was successful in getting Government agreement to its creation in my first year as Senator. This is the first Committee of its kind dedicated exclusively to mental healthcare in Ireland and the first of its kind in Europe. I was honoured to be elected Chair of the Committee which was launched in October 2017 with the intention of overseeing the next stages of the review of A Vision for Change.

The on-going review of A Vision for Change is an important part of the Committee’s focus. The initial meetings in October and November 2017 have focused on expenditure in mental health services, both regionally and by specific mental health service. The Committee is currently focusing on the reporting relationships between CHOs and the HSE in terms of Mental Health Services expenditure, and the HSE’s own accountability to Government.

The benefit of having a Committee is that it allows for a more detailed examination of a topic and allows members to compel the attendance of the HSE and Ministers to account for the provision of mental health services in Ireland.
